2002 SCA Symposium Workshop, September 23, 2002

Workshop theme: "Risk Reduction and Value of Core Analyses"

The following invited speakers gave presentations during the Risk Reduction and Value of Core Analyses Workshop. Presentations covered topics related to various reservoir-life time periods, from exploration and prospect evaluation to IOR and EOR. See the pdf files of their presentations for details.

Title: Exploration and Prospect Evaluation
Author: Ian Gamble

Ian Gamble has worked 20 years for BP since graduating from Sussex University with a BSc in Physics. Most of his time with BP has been spent working in the field of Special Core Analysis, with emphasis in water/oil relative permeability, wettability and coreflood simulation.

Title: Drilling and Formation Damage
Author: Graham M Robertson, Vice President, Corex

Graham trained as a geologist at the University of Aston in Birmingham and has spent 24 years in the Core Analysis industry. Graham is now Vice President of Corex based in London, but spends much of his time travelling throughout North Africa, the Middle East and the former Soviet Union promoting Corex’s Formation Damage, Sand Control and Sand Management testing technology. In his early career at Core Laboratories, he was responsible for introducing Ultra-violet core photography to the oil industry. He went on to become Core Labs manager for Africa based in the Ivory Coast. In 1987 he established Petrophysical Services, a Core Analysis and geological consultancy group that grew from 2 staff to over 120 in under two years, through the acquisition of Corex from SGS Redwood and the subsequent acquisition of Paleoservices. The Group continued to trade as Corex.

Graham designed, researched and introduced the first Digital Probe Permeameter to the Core Analysis industry. He published several papers on the instrumentation and data and is very proud that after its initial condemnation the measurements produced have finally been accepted as a valuable core analysis resource tool throughout the world.

Title: Primary and Secondary Recovery
Author: Gerald Hamon

Gerald received his Civil Engineer degree in 1975. He completed a PhD in Fluid Mechanics from the University of Grenoble (France) in 1979, the same year that he joined Elf. He has served professionally in various capacities, including laboratory engineer, reservoir engineer (North Sea operations, reservoir simulation), and in his current assignment as petrophysics expert with TotalFinaElf.

Title: IOR/EOR
Author: David Zornes

David R. Zornes is Manager of Reservoir Recovery Mechanisms with ConocoPhillips in Bartlesville, OK. His staff of engineers, scientists, and technologists conduct technical project work and services for reservoirs in USA, Norway, China, UK, Australia, Venezuela, Alaska and Deepwater SBU’s. Zornes served Phillips for over 25 years in a variety of positions including, Research and Production Technical Manager, EOR Director, Research Supervisor, EOR Engineer, and Research Engineer. He was Engineering Director for Central Oklahoma Area Operations from 1985-1989 and was involved in well stimulation and completions, field IOR applications and reservoir management. Zornes, a Kansas native, received his MS in Chemical Engineering from Kansas University in 1976 where he did graduate work as part of the Tertiary Oil Recovery Project (TORP).
